About Community Orchard Greenside (COG)
Our Roots in the Community
Community Orchard Greenside sprouted from a simple yet powerful idea: transforming a forgotten piece of land into a flourishing symbol of community unity and environmental care. What was once an underused bowling green is now a thriving orchard, thanks to the dedication and vision of the Greenside residents. Our journey began in 2024, fueled by a shared passion for nature and a commitment to creating a space where everyone can learn, relax, and connect.
Cultivating More Than Just Trees
At the heart of our endeavor lies a mission to foster a sustainable, inclusive, and vibrant community space. The Community Orchard is more than just a collection of fruit trees; it's a living classroom, a sanctuary for local wildlife, and a gathering place for all. We aim to provide a hands-on experience in horticulture, promote environmental education, and offer a serene retreat for residents and visitors alike.
Meet the People Behind the Leaves
Our orchard is nurtured by a dedicated team of volunteers and committee members, each bringing unique skills and a shared love for community and nature. From professional gardeners to enthusiastic locals, our team represents the diverse fabric of Greenside. Meet some of our key members:
- Pam Douglas, Chairperson: With over 40 years of experience in youth and community work, Pam spearheads our projects with passion and expertise.
- Louise Appleby, Treasurer: Louise's background in community work and her keen organizational skills keep us thriving.
- June Conway, Secretary: June's experience and her commitment to community service make her an invaluable asset to our team.
Growing Towards a Greener Tomorrow
Our vision extends beyond the present - we're cultivating a legacy that future generations of Greenside can cherish. We see the orchard evolving into a cornerstone of community life, a place where education, nature, and health intertwine. Our plans include expanding our educational programs, enhancing the biodiversity of the area, and continuing to foster a space where community ties can flourish.
